Teknopark İzmir is a technology park located in Izmir, Turkey on the Izmir Institute of Technology (IZECH) campus. Established in 2002 with the Corporation of İzmir’s Outstanding 21 Institutions, Teknopark Izmir is the fourth technology park in Turkey and covers two million square meters of land. Full operations began in 2004.
The park supports 800 employees working for over 157 domestic and foreign research and development (R&D) companies, 16 patents, and an estimated value of 266 million ₺ turnover and $20 million export. In 2013, Teknopark Izmir received the second place award based on the Turkey Technology Development Performance Index announced by the Ministry of Science, Industry, and Technology.
Teknopark İzmir will continue to unite qualified technological knowledge with industry by offering the incubation centre for innovative ideas. The Innovation Centre project is supported by the Development Agency of Turkey and will be completed in the near future.
Teknopark İzmir is located only 45 kilometres away from İzmir city enter by İzmir-Çeşme Highway; and 30 kilometres from Çeşme Port. Easy access is available from the city centre to the İzmir-Çeşme Highway and sea freight is available from Çeşme Port. Transportation options include public buses and minibuses available operating regularly from the park to the City of İzmir.
Since March 2017, 157 R&D companies are operating within the techno park.. These companies primarily support the following sectors: software development, biotechnology, electronics, machinery manufacturing, defense, energy, healthcare, design, chemistry, telecommunications, advanced materials, food, mining, nano materials, automotive, robotic systems, tourism, and the environment.
Having access to IZTECH, an international research institute, provides a global R&D environment for the companies here. Additional founders located in the region, such as Ege University and Dokuz Eylül University, also offer technical and social advantages to the companies.
Personnel of public institutions, agencies, and universities required to perform services as research personnel for the activities in the Zone may be employed part-time or full-time upon the permission of their institutions.
Academic personnel may establish a company with permission of the Executive Board of the University for the purpose of commercializing the outcome of their studies, assume partnership in an established company, and/or assume positions in the management of such companies.
Within the scope of Foreign Investment Incentives Law number 6224 and related clauses, foreign nationals and qualified R&D personnel are permitted to work in the Zone.
Revenue earned by the managing company and taxpayer residing in the zone via the applications of this law are exempt from income and corporate tax until 31.12.2023
Wages and earnings of researchers, software developers and other R&D personnel are also exempt from all taxes until 31.12.2023.
In accordance with law no. 4691 regarding Technology Development Zones, during the period entrepreneurs conduct business in technology developing zones, entrepreneurs are exempt from income or corporate tax; other delivery and services produced exclusively in these zones and in the form of system management, data management, business applications, sectorial, internet, mobile and military command control application software are also excluded from value added tax.
Additionally, according to law no. 5746 on supporting research and development activities, personnel whose wages are exempted from the income tax and who work at the companies in technology development zones as per law no. 4691, the insurance premium of employer share which is calculated through their wages is to covered by payments from the Ministry of Finance for five years for each employee.
Region and Buildings:
There are currently nine buildings (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 and A9) conducting commercial activities while the 10th building, Innovation Centre is under construction Teknopark İzmir occupies a central area of 218.4 hectares as well as an additional area of 6.4 hectares. In 2015, the space of the additional area reached full capacity, so the main area of 218.4 hectares will be opened.
Teknopark İzmir operates in the scope of the passing of the “4691 Technology Development Zone Law” and is managed by İzmir Technology Development Zone, Inc.
